You, like me, have probably noticed in various threads that I didn’t plan and think through everything in detail. How about you? Did you have clear ideas and were you able to implement them 100%? If not, what percentage of the result matched your planning and wishes at the time you moved into your house? How much or what did you change or wish for differently later on?
(Just one example: tiles in the bathrooms and/or on the floor. Some of you calculate, based on the tile size, which was chosen deliberately, whether and where “cutting” can be avoided or arranged in an aesthetically pleasing way. As mentioned, just an example, this is not meant to be a tiling discussion.)

We’ve seen this before... and we’re still waiting in vain. You’re right. Specifically, the following points come to mind:
- You can spend a lot of money on stairs. Depending on the manufacturer, an oak staircase can cost around €4000 (about $4,300) more than a beech one. With two staircases and white stringers, that nearly amounts to €10,000 (around $10,800). However, we only ever pass through the stairwell quickly to get to another room. So, without extra cost and to avoid the typical “kids’ room look,” we chose a finger-jointed beech staircase with varying shades.
- Our own smart home solution based on wireless technology. It’s nowhere near as advanced as KNX, but we only use it for all the roller shutters and selected lights anyway.
- Built-in wardrobes: Not much more expensive than regular wardrobes, but they look much nicer and provide more storage space.
