Hello everyone,

I have a question and would like to rely on the community’s experience: Do the colors of IKEA KALLAX shelves remain stable over time, or do they tend to fade, especially with daily use or exposure to light?

I am planning to place a KALLAX shelf in a very sunny window spot and want to avoid the surface fading quickly or the color noticeably changing. I am particularly interested in whether the material—whether melamine or another type of surface—is durable enough and if you might already have long-term experience with it.

Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are any special care tips to minimize potential color fading.

Thank you in advance for your insights and advice!

One quick note: coverings like tablecloths, fabrics, or decorations can preserve lighter spots over time. For KALLAX, protective measures are recommended if you want to maintain color stability.

Thanks in advance for the responses! The information about UV-related discoloration and yellowing was especially insightful.

I would also be interested to know if anyone has long-term experience with colored KALLAX shelves, for example in black or red. Are there differences in how they react to UV exposure, or is their sensitivity comparable to the white version?

To supplement the question regarding colored KALLAX models:

Colored melamine-coated surfaces tend to fade and change color due to UV exposure more than light, white finishes. Dark and intense colors like black or red, in particular, may show a noticeable loss of color intensity over time.

The coating is not UV-stabilized like materials specifically designed for outdoor or long-lasting furniture. Therefore, prolonged direct sunlight exposure can cause significant changes.

For longer durability, it is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and, if necessary, perform regular maintenance using mild cleaners.

It is as Lorukeo says. Colored painted or foiled surfaces are usually more sensitive. With intense colors, fading becomes noticeable more quickly. If you choose color, it’s better not to place it near a sunny window.
