Good morning.

I’m curious to know who here uses district heating.

We live as two people in a semi-detached house of about 130m2 (1,400 sq ft) built at the end of 2015, with underfloor heating. We use very little heating and rarely shower at home since we exercise five times a week.

Yesterday, the district heating bill arrived.

Rounded up, it was 10,000 kWh/year with an additional charge of nearly €150.
That means from now on a monthly payment of €107. I somehow find that “very expensive.”

Your 10,000 kWh is a normal consumption. However, district heating is probably the most expensive way to heat a new building at the moment. Here, district heating energy costs 50% more than gas from the same provider. Additionally, the basic fee is four times higher.

I just compared with my parents. Detached single-family house from the late 1970s. No district heating, but gas instead. Of course, it can only be compared to a limited extent, but they used roughly 36,000 kWh/year and pay about €200 in monthly installments.

The question is how much money you ultimately have to pay per kWh of heat.

And you will probably find that you end up around 12 cents, while your parents are closer to 7 cents.

I don’t have the detailed data for my district heating system on hand right now, but I can see my parents’ invoice online.

4.9 cents per kilowatt-hour
0.5 cents tax
€208 (approximately $) flat fee

I would also be interested in comparison values from other district heating users.
