Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and I’m wondering why it is so important to distribute the load evenly on the shelves. Surely, it’s not just about the appearance – but what exactly can happen if the weight is unevenly distributed? Are there any specific guidelines or recommendations on how to best distribute the load across the shelves?

I want to use my bookcase for a long time without risking any unpleasant surprises. Maybe some experienced users here have useful tips or explanations on why this topic is so important.

Thanks in advance for your help!

A small tip: Besides even weight distribution, the load per shelf is also important. Polyester bins or boxes that are too heavy can place a lot of strain on the shelf boards.

In my experience, it’s best to put the heaviest items on the lower shelves. Even if the shelving unit goes all the way up, it’s better to keep the upper shelves lighter.

The material is overstressed due to uneven loads

Exactly, this happens quite often and usually leads to unsightly damage.

Another advantage: When loading by eye, the shelf also looks tidier 😉

Do you have any tips on how to best secure the shelving unit against tipping?

Yes, there are simple solutions: Attaching the shelf to the wall is the most important step, and it is also strongly recommended by IKEA. Small angle brackets or metal fasteners are used for this purpose, which are fixed to both the furniture and the wall.

This prevents the shelf from tipping over under load or on uneven floors. Additionally, it helps avoid accidents, especially if there are children in the home.

If you secure the shelf this way and also distribute the load evenly, you will really enjoy the piece of furniture for a long time.

Great discussion here! 🙂 I believe the most important message is: Don’t just stuff things in and hope they hold.

Even weight distribution protects the furniture and helps keep your mind organized – at least that’s how it works for me 😉

My tip: If you have heavy books, try mixing them with some lighter decorative items. This way, the weight spreads more evenly on its own.

And hey, it’s a bit playful too: you discover new ways to arrange the shelf whenever you pay attention to it.

If possible, secure the shelf to the wall as well.
Exactly, that’s the wildcard that makes the whole setup work!
