Hello everyone,

we want to have the hardwood floor in the living room replaced.
Today we received the quote. Overall, everything seems reasonable and clear. But the disposal cost shocked us: "Disposal landfill – €75 per square meter (ft²)" 🤨
That’s almost as expensive as the new hardwood floor itself. Altogether, disposal alone will cost us nearly 2,000 euros.

The company surely knows what they’re offering and why.
But there must be a cheaper way to do this, right?
Is it worth doing the disposal ourselves?

We don’t have a trailer, and unfortunately, I’m not sure if the hardwood is glued down. It’s definitely coated with a finish.

Hello,
Let’s do a quick calculation...
Parquet weighs about 10-12 kg per square meter. To be generous, let’s say 20 kg. With disposal costs of 3750 euros per ton, that's completely unreasonable! Asbestos boards would be cheaper...

A quick search shows disposal costs for treated wood in the range of 75-100 euros per ton.

I would politely point out to the company that they probably made a typo. 75 €/ton is reasonable.
If they are serious about those numbers, I would definitely keep my distance from that company.

Best regards,

Andreas

Thank you, we were also quite surprised.
Let’s assume it is not only painted but also glued, which would make it hazardous waste... but that still can’t be right, can it?

Considering the price, we even thought about stacking it behind the shed ourselves and then never thinking about it again 😎

Maybe they mean cubic meters? That would make more sense. For clearance companies, 40 EUR per m³ (about 1.3 cubic yards) is common. If you then add the hazardous waste surcharge, nearly double that amount is plausible.

Ask at the recycling center. It’s not even 30 square meters (about 320 square feet), so you can usually transport it without a trailer if needed. If you deliver it yourself as a private individual, you will generally get the cheaper rate.

In Berlin, this would be considered reclaimed wood or bulky waste, and up to 3 cubic meters (3.9 cubic yards) is even free of charge per collection point per day.
