Hallo1232120 Feb 2025 21:17Hello everyone,
I am currently renovating a house. Although I am still working on the interior, I am already thinking about the garage. I would like to share my ideas with you and get some input.
Current situation:
Single-family house with a garage from the 1970s
There is a duplex car lift in the garage.
The duplex car lift still works fine despite its age.
Problem
Due to the size of modern cars, the two spots on the duplex car lift are practically unusable—unless I were to replace my car with a Smart.
Possible solution
I have been considering removing the duplex car lift entirely and filling the garage so that it can be driven in at ground level in the future. I tested listing the duplex car lift as "free to take" on a classifieds site and several people are interested in dismantling and picking it up themselves.
After that, I would have a pit in the garage measuring about 3.1 x 1.3 x 5.5 m (10.2 x 4.3 x 18 ft). That’s over 22 cubic meters (m³) in volume. According to Google, one cubic meter of gravel weighs around 1.7 metric tons. So I would need approximately 37 tons of gravel.
What would you suggest for filling this space? Gravel, recycled concrete, or construction debris? Should it be filled in 30 cm (12 inches) layers and compacted with a plate compactor after each layer? What is the best way to get the material to my house? I don’t think my driveway can handle a 40-ton truck.
And should I put a layer of paving on top afterwards?
What do you think of my idea? As I mentioned, I am just starting to consider the possibilities and I’m open to alternative suggestions.
Best regards
