Hello
I want to retile our living room and kitchen. The two rooms are connected, so it’s one open space without a door. Now I want to tile over the existing tiles. That’s not a problem, but what do I do about my built-in dishwasher?
I originally planned to tile up to the kitchen’s baseboard on the floor, then shorten the baseboard and reinstall it. But now I realize I wouldn’t be able to remove the dishwasher anymore. The height up to the underside of the countertop is currently 820 mm (32 inches). If I add about 20 mm (0.8 inches) for the new tiles, that leaves 800 mm (31.5 inches) clearance. I won’t be able to take out the current dishwasher in case of a defect, and a new one won’t fit either since they are usually around 810 mm (32 inches) high. I can’t lift the countertop either because it’s overbuilt at the edge. Is there a solution, or do I have to remove the tiles in the kitchen and install a beveled trim between the kitchen and living room?
Regards, Gerd

I would say, use an 8mm (5/16 inch) tile and a 4mm (5/32 inch) adhesive layer. That way, you’ll end up with a total thickness of about 10 to 11mm (3/8 to 7/16 inch).

The tiles have already arrived; they were made-to-order, so returning them will be rather difficult. They are 1.05cm (0.4 inches) thick, plus primer, bonding agent, and adhesive.
I hadn’t considered the dishwasher before; I only just noticed it now.

Sounds harsh, but that is probably unfortunately the only option. Annoying...
