Hello everyone,

I am planning a move soon and would like to safely and as easily as possible disassemble my Billy bookshelf to transport it without damage. Since the shelf consists of several individual parts, I am wondering: which parts should I remove first when taking apart the Billy bookshelf?

Is there a recommended order that has proven effective, for example starting with the shelves, side panels, or back panel? And should I loosen screws first or pay special attention to any specific clips?

I would appreciate helpful advice, including tips on handling the individual parts to avoid breakage or warping.

I look forward to your suggestions!

Hello trata,

When disassembling the Billy shelf, I generally recommend removing the shelves first. These are usually just clipped or slotted in place, and taking them out makes the rest of the disassembly easier since they are no longer in the way. After that, I would remove the back panel – it is typically attached with small nails and should be taken off carefully because it is often made of thin material and can break easily.

After removing the back panel, I would unscrew the screws holding the side panels. It is important to fully unscrew these screws before loosening any clamps to avoid damage.

Important: Work on a soft surface to prevent scratches on the surface.

If you still have the instructions, they can help with the order; otherwise, proceed carefully.

Good luck!

Always remove the shelves first, then use a crowbar to lift off the back panel. Finally, unscrew the side panels. You can remove the screws with a cordless drill, then release the clamps afterwards.

Hello trata,

I would like to address this topic in more detail because problems often occur during a move if the Billy bookcase is not disassembled properly.

First: The Billy bookcase typically consists of two side panels, several shelves, a back panel, screws, and wooden dowels or biscuits for stabilization.

Step 1: Remove all the shelves. Usually, they are either just resting on supports or held in place by small metal pins. Be careful not to let the pins fall out of the sides, or you might lose them.

Step 2: Unscrew the screws that connect the side panels with the top and bottom panels. It is important to fully remove all screws evenly to avoid stress on the panels. A Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill with torque control is ideal.

Step 3: The back panel is the most delicate part. If it is made of thin hardboard, carefully pull it out. It is often only nailed or stapled in place. Place a protective layer underneath in case it breaks.

Step 4: The biscuits (if present) are often loose. Carefully remove and keep them, as they are important for stability when reassembling.

Question: Do you have a standard-sized Billy bookcase (80 cm wide, 28 cm deep (31.5 inches wide, 11 inches deep)) or a custom size? This can sometimes affect how you proceed, especially regarding screw positions.

If you provide more information, I can give you even more specific advice.

To prevent damage: Wrap each panel in a blanket or plastic wrap for transport, handling the back panel especially carefully. Avoid shocks, as it is very fragile.

I hope this helps you.

I agree, but I want to add that you should be very careful with the back panel. A crowbar can be useful if the panel is firmly attached, but too much force can cause irreparable damage.

I recommend starting at a corner and slowly prying between the wall and the back panel with a thin screwdriver or putty knife before using the crowbar.

The standard dimensions are relevant because there are sometimes special rules for screws and back panels. If trata replies – that could help provide the right advice for disassembly.
