Hello forum,

I haven’t found a thread about Digitalstrom here yet, so I thought I’d start one.
If I understand correctly, the installation is quite simple and can be added (even afterward) behind any light fixture, switch, or outlet. The range of functions is supposed to be quite extensive (dimming, intelligent switching of circuits, controlling device functions, and so on).

Network diagram of a household: router, modem, lights, outlets, smartphone, computer.

According to the shop, each connector costs around 80-100 EUR (about 85-110 USD) – quite expensive for every device, in my opinion.

Is there anyone here who has already worked intensively with this system or installed it? Do you have any additional examples of functions? I’m interested, but the price is a bit of a deterrent for me.

Hello,
unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with Digitalstrom yet.
The dealer network is still being established.
Digitalstrom is still relatively new to the market.

Such "hybrid" KNX systems (e.g., Powernet), which of course also include Digitalstrom, have existed for years and are not really a new development.

These hybrid solutions are definitely a genuine alternative to a "real" KNX/EIB system.
Whether for retrofitting in an older building or for a new installation.
A KNX installation is naturally much more flexible.
But it really depends on what you want and how big the budget is.

I don’t agree that it’s more flexible: Doesn’t KNX require a separate data cable? This means the system should be largely planned in advance for new construction.

A solution that is built up gradually seems more flexible to me.

I don’t see it as more flexible: Doesn’t KNX require a separate data cable to be installed? This means that for new construction, the system should be planned in detail from the start.

A solution that can be expanded step by step seems more flexible to me.

With KNX / EIB, a separate data cable is required. Planning is, of course, also necessary. Since in EIB systems the sensors are networked together via data cables, there is more flexibility when it comes to changes. This can be done without any intervention in the wiring.

Test system is running. All functions work. Easy to program.

The issue is the cycle time of 400 ms (0.4 seconds) in the circuit. You press the button and have to wait until the switch activates. In the same circuit, this is just tolerable. However, if you use the advantage of switching in another circuit via the bus, you get double the switching time—almost a second (0.8 seconds). The whole family and every visitor need to be instructed about this. I have even seen situations that led to divorces because the wife couldn’t handle the system.
Conclusion: My investment of more than 1000 euros for the test system has gone to waste.
And I lost a business idea. It would have been perfect. Not feasible for a new build, but maybe okay as an emergency solution.

All the extra frills are unnecessary!
