Hello everyone, I am currently digging holes to set fence posts in concrete. So far, it has taken me about 7 hours for 12 holes. These are only about 30cm (12 inches) deep with a diameter of approximately 20cm (8 inches). I still need to dig around 25 more holes. The soil is very clayey and rocky. I removed the top 10cm (4 inches) of topsoil with a spade and then used a hammer and chisel to finish the rest. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could make this easier? I am hesitant to use an earth auger because I’m worried it might damage the bit due to the stones and rocks.

Use an earth auger and water the ground beforehand to prevent it from being too hard.
Manual augers come in various sizes. This makes the job quick and easy.

PS:
You won’t be happy with foundations only 30cm (12 inches) deep. After the first winter, everything will be crooked and uneven.
Frost-resistant foundations are also recommended for fences.

I could try to get a hand-operated earth auger like that. It’s an idea. Of course, I would prefer to go deeper. But the way I approached it, that was practically impossible.

You need to make the holes wider, otherwise you won’t be able to get down safely. They should be at least 60cm (24 inches) deep.

You can do it by hand, but only little by little.

The earth auger from Fiskars works very well here, even in clay soil.
