Hello,

I have a basic question about the position of the water connection for a washbasin. For a new construction project, I need to decide the location of the connections. The bathroom sink will be installed on a wall between a corner and a window. The wall is 90cm (35 inches) wide, and the vanity unit will be 80cm (31.5 inches) wide. Should the connection be placed in the center? How important is it for the connection to be exactly in the middle? Depending on this, I might place the vanity right in the corner to leave some space on the side for a towel holder. I am not sure how flexible these connections are when it comes to a deviation of a few centimeters from the center.
For cost reasons, the vanity will be one from IKEA instead of the sanitary supplier originally planned (cost difference: 700 euros).

What is to the left and right of the 90 cm (35 inches)? How cramped will it look in the end? How important is it to you that the tile grout lines align at specific (symmetrical) intervals, for example with the edge of the washbasin? Are the tiles freely placeable, or do they need to be laid in a certain pattern or spacing?

In our case, a washbasin was moved about 10 cm (4 inches) afterward (to align it with the tile grout lines...). However, we have the vanity cabinet custom-made, which allows us to adjust it around the siphon accordingly. With a ready-made cabinet from Ikea, for example, the cutout in the back panel might not allow for much flexibility.

Regarding the tight space: it is quite cramped. The washbasin takes up 80cm (31.5 inches) of the approximately 90cm (35.4 inches) rough opening. But an 80cm (31.5 inches) washbasin is really practical. Or would 60cm (23.6 inches) be better?

Around the washbasin, I won’t use tiles but will paint with a water-resistant coating. That should be enough. I live alone, without a partner or children.

If only the recess at the back of the washbasin is an issue, that’s easy to fix. I was more concerned about connections that might not fit or that aren’t flexible.

Make it so that the 80cm (31.5 inches) washbasin unit fits flush against the right wall. Leaving a gap there won't help you. However, I would recommend using a basin that is 50cm or 60cm (20 inches or 24 inches) wide within an 80cm (31.5 inches) unit, so you have countertop space on both the left and right sides. Seal the edges with silicone.

Yes, a good idea to have the sink a bit narrower and include some countertop space. I am still looking for a solution for that. Ikea is somewhat limited in terms of flexibility. To wash under the arm, the arm needs about 43 cm (17 inches) of space to the side. So it fits.

I was more concerned about whether, for example, a toilet will be placed right next to it on the other side, or if a toilet brush or something similar will go there. If there is (relatively) a lot of free space next to it, I might avoid placing it directly against the adjacent wall for aesthetic reasons, so it doesn’t look cramped in the corner. Instead, leave enough space between it and the wall to fit the towel holder. In the end, it’s mostly a matter of visual preference.

Edit: I would also prefer having a shelf on at least one side of the basin and choosing a basin that is only 60cm (24 inches) wide.
