Dear forum members,

We want to redesign the entrance area of our house: new garage door, new front door, new paving, and stairs. Unfortunately, the garage door is positioned quite awkwardly (far to the right), and despite many ideas on how to design the area to look modern and have that certain something (wow factor), I haven’t yet come up with a satisfying solution.

Current situation: garage door – sectional door in dark gray, new front door also dark gray.
To close up the light well on the left and extend the paving forward up to that boundary (gray).
Possibly also wood cladding next to the garage door.
Entrance steps either in dark natural stone or in the same style as the paving.

But as I said, I’m missing that wow factor here. Does anyone have any ideas for us? Many thanks in advance.

There are already quite a few valuable tips here. Thank you all. We really need to start by considering where we will park the car (thanks, Tigerlily), because if we design everything nicely and then just park the car right in front, it doesn’t make much sense. We do have enough space.

Unfortunately, the garage door has to go—it’s already rusting and in pretty bad shape after more than 40 years. But I have also been considering a double-leaf gate.

@ypg: I didn’t quite understand the cladding aligned downward, sorry. Do you mean the cladding as wide as above the window, then also on the left and above the garage door? Or flush with the wooden cladding, extended downward, reaching about the middle of the garage door on the right?

Thanks also for all the encouragement to be a bit more “bold.” We actually are—see the photo of the back of the house with the attic conversion.

Further tips are, of course, very welcome.

Again: what will the garage be used for? And regarding the parking space: a site plan of your property is missing. We don’t know the driveway situation.

My color choice for hidden front doors (even though I don’t have any) would be red.

After a long back-and-forth, we had our front door and side door custom-made in RAL2002 Blood Orange... A beautiful, warm, strong shade that has already attracted a lot of attention from curious passersby _wink_ We enjoy our unique door every day!

A bit of greenery would definitely fit well there—perhaps let a grapevine climb the white wall? Personally, I also like ivy on house walls, but I know many people who see ivy as nothing more than a weed. I think grapevines always look very attractive and cozy, and they become quite a focal point once they’ve had some time to grow.

Otherwise, I’m personally a fan of adding a bit of color to the house. I would keep the garage door simple and instead give the front door a bright color! The blood orange shade, as the person before me suggested, sounds great to me and would be something to consider for our home as well. I also like a dark blue, but it really has to match the rest of the house well.
