Hello everyone,

I am currently designing an IKEA METOD kitchen island and am actively looking for ideas on how to optimize such an island with particularly well-thought-out storage and an integrated seating area. I am especially interested in solutions that make the most of the available space without restricting freedom of movement.

Another important aspect for me is the combination of functionality and aesthetics: the storage should be well-organized so that pots, pans, spices, and other kitchen utensils are easily accessible, while the seating area can simultaneously serve as a comfortable spot for dining or working.

Has anyone here had experience or advice on which METOD cabinets and accessories are particularly suitable for planning the island with clever storage? How have you integrated the seating area to be both comfortable and not limit the storage options?

I look forward to your opinions, suggestions, and examples!

This statement sounds reasonable, but you should also consider the load capacity of Metod pull-outs, especially if you want to store heavy pots.

Good point, load capacity is very important to me since I also have heavy cast iron pans.

Maybe you could also mention whether electrical connections or lighting are planned for the island?

Yes, regarding that: The island will include a power outlet for small appliances as well as a USB charging port. I am also considering LED lighting installed under the countertop.

The room size is around 15 m² (160 ft²), so space is limited but sufficient for an island with seating.

Do you have any tips for a sturdy construction, especially if the seating area will slightly overhang and technical components are planned?

A good option is to use sturdy metal or stainless steel brackets mounted under the countertop. These support the load of the overhanging section and relieve stress on the IKEA cabinets.

For integrating power outlets and USB ports, I recommend consulting an electrician before installation to ensure there are sufficient cable channels and circuit protection.

The countertop itself should be at least 2.8 to 3 cm (1.1 to 1.2 inches) thick to prevent sagging. Materials like solid wood or high-pressure laminate (HPL) work well for this purpose.

Additionally, you can install cross beams within the structure to greatly increase stability, allowing the seating area to be used confidently without concern.

I completely agree. Additionally, I recommend positioning the brackets so they do not interfere with the legroom of seated users – otherwise, it can be quite uncomfortable.

I also don’t rule out using LED lighting under the countertop.

LED strips with warm white color are perfect for that. They create a pleasant atmosphere while also improving visibility in seating and work areas.

My tip: If you are building the island yourself or working with a carpenter, make sure the lighting is installed with dimming capability, so you can adjust the brightness depending on mood or time of day.

Regarding storage solutions – your idea of including USB outlets is very practical, allowing the seating area to be used for work without relying on external chargers.
