Hello everyone,

I am currently designing an IKEA METOD kitchen island and am actively looking for ideas on how to optimize such an island with particularly well-thought-out storage and an integrated seating area. I am especially interested in solutions that make the most of the available space without restricting freedom of movement.

Another important aspect for me is the combination of functionality and aesthetics: the storage should be well-organized so that pots, pans, spices, and other kitchen utensils are easily accessible, while the seating area can simultaneously serve as a comfortable spot for dining or working.

Has anyone here had experience or advice on which METOD cabinets and accessories are particularly suitable for planning the island with clever storage? How have you integrated the seating area to be both comfortable and not limit the storage options?

I look forward to your opinions, suggestions, and examples!

Hello Manfred,

your project is really interesting, especially since the METOD series offers many options, but optimizing the space often remains a challenge.

First, it is worth choosing tall drawers that you can plan to be deep and wide. This way, large pots fit easily. If you design the island with one side facing the room, you can allocate smaller compartments for spices or kitchen tools on the cabinet side that is less accessible.

Regarding the seating area: seating surfaces are often realized with pull-out bridge seats or custom-fitting benches recessed under the countertop. Combining these with bar stools provides flexibility without taking up permanent space. It is important that the seating area does not block walking paths and that you allow enough legroom.

Make sure to take time during planning to review the interior fittings of the METOD cabinets: drawer inserts, plate holders, or pull-outs for waste separation help keep everything organized and increase storage efficiency.

This statement sounds reasonable, but you should also consider the load capacity of Metod pull-outs, especially if you want to store heavy pots.

I would also question whether a purely island-focused layout prioritizing storage is really the best solution. Often, the seating area then gets neglected or feels cramped.

It’s worth thinking about more flexible solutions instead, such as a peninsula resembling an island, where storage and seating are better balanced. Is your space large enough for such a variation?

Additionally, you should ask yourself: Are seating areas needed permanently, or just occasionally? This can significantly influence the choice of layout.

Manfred, definitely use drawers with soft-close. This ensures comfort and protects against wear.

For the seating area, bar stools and a countertop flush with the island are suitable. This way, free movement is maintained.

Good morning Manfred,

I would like to go into more detail about storage planning, as the METOD series, with its numerous combination options, is ideal for a custom kitchen island but requires careful planning.

First, you should carefully analyze the layout of your kitchen. When planning the island, your focus should be on accessibility—that is, how the workflow between the sink, stove, and refrigerator is arranged, as this can significantly affect storage design.

Regarding the cabinets, I recommend the following approach:
- Use base cabinets that are at least 80 cm deep (31.5 inches) to provide ample volume.
- Utilize internal drawers and storage boxes specifically designed for METOD, for example, for bottles or spice jars.
- Incorporate special drawers with adjustable dividers that allow you to neatly organize cutlery, kitchen tools, or food items.

For the seating area: a work surface height of about 90–95 cm (35–37 inches) is ideal if you plan to use bar stools. If a bench seating area is planned, be sure to allow generous knee and foot clearance, with at least 30 cm (12 inches) of depth under the countertop.

Besides ergonomics, you should also consider stability: especially if the seating area overhangs or is designed as a ledge, sturdy support beams or additional bracing are important.

Perhaps you can also add whether electrical outlets or lighting are planned for the island? These often significantly influence storage options and spatial arrangements.

Additional information:

When it comes to a METOD kitchen island with a seating area and storage, the modules should be carefully matched to the room dimensions. IKEA offers cabinets in standard sizes, typically 60x60 cm (24x24 inches). To design the island optimally, a combination of different cabinet types is advisable:

- Tall cabinets (e.g., 80 or 90 cm (31½ or 35½ inches) high) for pantry items or appliances.
- Drawers with full-extension slides for easy access.
- Corner solutions with carousel cabinets, if the island is designed with a corner, for optimal space utilization.

The seating area can often be created by an overhanging countertop. This usually means a countertop resting on a lowered base cabinet or sturdy brackets. This provides enough legroom as well as additional storage space.

Choosing the right material for the countertop is also important: since an island is often used as a multifunctional area, the material should be durable and easy to maintain.

I also recommend paying close attention to the measurements in the IKEA planning software during the design phase to ensure a perfect fit.
