ᐅ Is a water softener system advisable or not?

I already asked some questions about our gas supplier in another thread—thanks again for the feedback.

Now we are facing the decision: "Water softener system—yes or no?"

Our house is about 10 years old (just bought it). Unfortunately, we have very hard water here (around 23). You can already see it on the faucets (where the water comes out), and of course, this isn’t ideal for cleaning or for the pipes either.

We were advised to install a water softener system (we had the idea before, too). However, the local utility company advises against it, and I have also read that these systems can be prone to bacterial growth if they are not properly maintained. Also, chemicals are said to be added to the water (I initially thought it worked through a special salt). Maintenance and service costs also seem quite high, on top of the initial purchase price.

How have you dealt with this? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?

At the moment, I am leaning toward not installing one.

12°dH is nothing. Most have only 8°dH after descaling.

Before descaling 18-21
After descaling 4-6

Dear all,
I am very interested in a descaling/softening system because the water hardness in Berlin is quite high. I find it quite hard, but according to the water utilities, the average hardness is "only" 14°dH.
Therefore, I have the following questions:
  • In your opinion, is it worth it?
  • How large is a water softening system?
  • What are the experiences with ion-exchange softeners and their suitability for use in certain devices, such as humidifiers? The user manuals of these devices explicitly warn against using such water, as it could damage the devices.
  • Does anyone have a search tip for a resource that provides an overview? When I search online, I mostly find "advertisements." Wikipedia only explains the technology/chemistry without offering a clear list of pros and cons.

Does anyone here have knowledge about this?

Best regards,

Tolentino

I installed a water softening system at our place last week. We were simply tired of always seeing a light film on the sink despite cleaning it regularly.

1. In my opinion, I should have installed it during the initial construction.
2. It depends on your requirements. Sizes range from microwave-sized units to pallet-sized systems, depending on what you need.
3. If the manufacturers recommend it, it’s probably for a good reason.
4. It’s not rocket science. The major brands are BWT, JUDO, Grünbeck. You can’t really go wrong with them.

P.S. Also in Berlin

And may I ask, what did you install?

Who installed and adjusted the system? It looks like it’s below 0 dH. Anything below 8 dH no longer provides any benefits anyway.
