ᐅ Is a water softener system advisable or not?

I already asked some questions about our gas supplier in another thread—thanks again for the feedback.

Now we are facing the decision: "Water softener system—yes or no?"

Our house is about 10 years old (just bought it). Unfortunately, we have very hard water here (around 23). You can already see it on the faucets (where the water comes out), and of course, this isn’t ideal for cleaning or for the pipes either.

We were advised to install a water softener system (we had the idea before, too). However, the local utility company advises against it, and I have also read that these systems can be prone to bacterial growth if they are not properly maintained. Also, chemicals are said to be added to the water (I initially thought it worked through a special salt). Maintenance and service costs also seem quite high, on top of the initial purchase price.

How have you dealt with this? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?

At the moment, I am leaning toward not installing one.

After writing the list, I thought that this breakdown might spark some debate. We simply need a lot of water.

The water in my current apartment has a hardness level of 23, and it’s driving me crazy. There are limescale spots everywhere in the shower, uneven water jets from the showerhead and faucets, and the inside of the kettle and coffee machine is white with buildup. A water softening system is certainly not essential, but if I were to build here with this water quality, I would definitely plan to install one for comfort reasons.

I would install the system, or at least plan a location for it so that it can be retrofitted later.

P.S. Move to the Ore Mountains with us—the water here is so soft that the water supplier has to harden it using CO2 treatment. No joke. Otherwise, the pH value would be too high and could no longer be controlled as usual with other additives.

As I have mentioned before:
If you drink a lot of tap water, first try the water from a water softening system.

Neither we nor many of our acquaintances like the taste. Therefore, we decided against installing a water softener.

However, you don’t have to do without water softening. The water is usually taken from the kitchen. For this purpose, a separate cold water line is installed before the softener at the sink. It costs nothing and solves the problem.

And I like the taste better... the downside is that I no longer enjoy many sparkling waters.
