turalHello everyone, I want to decorate my IKEA BILLY shelf with adhesive films because the surface looks a bit plain and I would like to create a more personalized look. My question is: which materials are best suited for applying adhesive films to BILLY shelves? I am particularly interested in whether there are specific types of films that adhere well to the melamine-coated surface without forming bubbles or peeling off after some time. It would also be helpful to know if certain materials offer better protection against scratches or moisture. Does anyone have experience with vinyl films, polypropylene, or other materials in connection with BILLY shelves? Tips on preparing the surface or ensuring long-term adhesion of the film would also be greatly appreciated.

zarJody686 Jun 2022 09:17The melamine-coated surface of the BILLY shelf is generally smooth and provides a solid base. For a durable and attractive finish, I recommend high-quality self-adhesive vinyl films with a thickness of at least 80 micrometers. These films adhere well to smooth, non-porous surfaces and are resistant to scratches, moisture, and UV radiation. It is important to thoroughly clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol before application and allow it to dry completely. Polypropylene films tend to be thinner and less durable, are more likely to peel off, and are less resistant to mechanical stress. An application film designed to facilitate bubble-free adhesion is ideal for mounting.

I would like to add that besides the material, the adhesive layer is also crucial: permanent adhesive vinyl films offer better adhesion but are more difficult to remove later without residues. Those who want to make occasional changes should look for repositionable films with silicone adhesive.

Additionally, I do not recommend roughening the back of the film before applying it, as it only helps to a limited extent on smooth surfaces and can reduce adhesion. Instead, careful, bubble-free application using a squeegee is more effective.
One more tip regarding long-term protection: a matte laminate protective layer over the film can make the surface more durable and protect against wear, especially in high-traffic areas.
