Hello everyone,

We are currently building a house. At the moment, our basement is being constructed. In our new development area, we have noticed that the developers pour the terraces with concrete right away. We spoke to our basement contractor about this. He said it wouldn’t be a problem for him and that he could incorporate it with strip footings connected to the basement.

Is a concrete terrace a good base for wooden decking later on? Does it save costs and hassle compared to the usual terrace construction with a gravel sub-base and individual footings?

On our property, there is a load-bearing gravel layer with about 50cm (20 inches) of topsoil above it — which we could omit under the terrace. It would also be possible to raise the desired level there. Would you recommend having the terrace poured in concrete from the start?

Our plot has no slope and the allowed terrace area is 5.50 x 2.50m (18 x 8 feet).

Sebastian

Hello

I would definitely go ahead and have it done immediately. We built ours on a gravel layer and are not very satisfied. Everything is in place as it should be, but I find it more stable when it’s concreted. And if the basement contractor says it’s no problem, I would have it done right away.
