Hello everyone,
A few months ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, and I’ve recently noticed that the originally light oak veneer is gradually darkening. I understand that wood and veneered surfaces can naturally age when exposed to daylight, but this effect bothers me because the furniture no longer looks as fresh as it did at the beginning.
My question to the community: Are there any ways to prevent or at least significantly slow down the darkening of the KALLAX shelving unit?
I’m especially interested in whether some kind of sealing, varnishing, or special UV protection could help without altering the appearance too much. If anyone has practical experience or specific recommendations, I would be very grateful for detailed advice.

I agree with Alberto51. In addition to sealing and using window film, I recommend designing the room lighting so that the piece of furniture is not constantly exposed to direct sunlight. Blinds or shades can also help if you want to minimize visible changes.
One final question for you: Are you planning to treat the KALLAX yourself or would you prefer to have it done professionally? Some DIY projects, if not carried out carefully, can later cause visible damage or uneven color areas.

Are you planning to finish the KALLAX yourself or have it done professionally?I would like to do it myself. Fortunately, I have some basic DIY skills, but I will definitely pay close attention to the tips for careful application. Thanks for the warning!
In the medium term, I will first try a UV protection film on the window and then tackle the clear coat with UV protection.
If anyone in the community can recommend brands or products that are particularly suitable for veneered KALLAX surfaces, I would greatly appreciate the tips.

Recommend Osmo – water-based, contains UV protectionPlease note that Osmo products have varying VOC levels depending on the specific variant. It is advisable to carefully review the technical data sheets, especially if odor is a concern.
Thank you all for the helpful advice and tips! Together with a better location, window film, and a good UV-protective oil or clear varnish, I will now actively address the issue of darkening over time.
I’m happy to share my experiences here in a few weeks if anyone is interested.
Best regards!
