Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy shelf unit from IKEA, and unfortunately, it constantly makes creaking noises whenever I walk past it or apply a slight load. This is really annoying because I expected the shelf to stand firmly without squeaking or creaking. My question is: Are there any proven tips or methods to effectively reduce or eliminate these creaking sounds on the BILLY shelf? I suspect it has something to do with the connection between the shelves or the back panel, but I’m not sure how to best address it. I would really appreciate it if anyone has a solution, including material recommendations or specific assembly tips. Thanks in advance!

A good first step is to gently retighten all the screwsThanks, I will definitely try that first.

readjusting after a few days of use can also helpThat’s interesting, I would have thought that once assembled, the shelf is fixed firmly enough to prevent any movement. I will report back.
What exactly do you mean by Teflon tape under the screw heads? Is there a specific size or type? Does anyone know if regular electrical tape is sufficient?
Is there a difference between the hardboard back panel and other back panels for BILLY in terms of creaking?

Does anyone know if regular electrical tape is sufficient?Teflon tape is designed specifically for threads and provides good lubrication, but it is usually too wide for screw heads. Felt or foam rubber pads are a better option; you can either stick them on or place them loosely underneath.
Electrical tape is generally too thick and not very durable. I wouldn’t recommend it because it can peel off or shrink over time.

Is there a difference between the hardboard back panel and other back panels for the BILLY in terms of creaking?Yes, the hardboard panel is rigid and relatively thin, which can cause tension when inserted, especially if the shelving unit is placed on an uneven surface or screwed in too tightly. Some people switch to a thinner back panel or cushion it with small felt spacers at the corners. This reduces pressure somewhat and helps minimize creaking.
A brief note on creaking noises: They are usually caused by moving joints. In this case, with the BILLY shelf unit, the screws and the back panel are mainly responsible.
Lubricants like wax or silicone often help. Felt pads at contact points and tightening the screws well should reduce the noise.

Regarding the back panel: If it fits too tightly, it can cause stress. Sometimes loosening it slightly or securing the shelf to the wall helps reduce movement.
Let me summarize: Check the screws, use felt or foam rubber on contact points, slightly relieve or insulate the back panel, and possibly use small plastic washers as a base.
This will help you, rudi64. It took me a while to find the right combination of measures, but it’s definitely worth the effort because the noise problems disappear afterward. One more tip: Don’t forget to apply a few drops of furniture oil after the adjustment to care for the wood.
