Hello dear IKEA enthusiasts,

I’m not sure if this is the right place for my question, but since there are so many clever people here, I thought I’d give it a try 😎
My boyfriend and I are moving into the apartment of our dreams at the end of November, but the large gable in the dining/living room is causing us some headaches... You can see a photo here—I had to crop a bit at the bottom to avoid infringing on the privacy of the previous tenant.

Large glass front in the living room with many windows and a door to the terrace

We definitely need to hang a curtain there since directly opposite is the cemetery and the church, and people can really look straight in... The question is how? From one side to the other, the length is 4 m (13 feet). I read somewhere at IKEA that a curtain rod of this length has to be supported not only at the ends but also twice in between; otherwise, it will sag. But where should we attach those supports? We can’t really drill into the plastic window frames.

Does IKEA offer any solutions for windows like these?

Thanks and best regards,
Leah

Hello, just let people take a look inside. How did the previous tenants do it?
If you can’t attach anything to the side, the only option is to fix a rail to the ceiling, for example with wire cables. As far as I know, IKEA doesn’t offer a ready-made solution specifically for this case. I would probably make something myself using Dignitet and Kvartal.

Hello IKEA expert,

letting someone in to have a look is not really an option for us; we prefer to keep it private.
The previous tenant was a dentist who only had his office upstairs, and he never did anything to the window—it was always like in the picture.
I’m afraid it will come down to a do-it-yourself solution; I’ll have to take a closer look at the Kvartal system 🙂
In any case, thank you very much for your advice!

Best regards

I’ve taken a look at this now... Of course, we could simply fix the curtain rod normally on the left and right ends and hang a thin wire cable in the middle, which would then be held at the very top of the peak by a hook.

However, the IKEA curtain rods are all too short since we need 4 meters (13 feet) or a bit more...

I seem to remember that there used to be “couplings” that allowed you to connect two curtain rods. Does IKEA still offer something like that, or do you have any idea where else one could get such a connector? I’ve already seen a connector for their curtain rods at OBI with a diameter of 16 mm (0.63 inches), but the RÄCKA rods from IKEA are apparently 19 mm (0.75 inches)—though I’m not sure if that’s the outer or inner diameter, since they are extendable and not uniform in thickness everywhere.
