We have been intensively working on our kitchen planning for a little over three weeks now. Sometimes we even dream about it at night, but it’s an exciting topic.

At the moment, we have two options... a Nobilia kitchen (a good, solid mid-range choice) and Schmidt kitchens (a major European kitchen manufacturer), which we actually prefer slightly more in terms of quality.

The kitchen concept is mostly settled. Nobilia kitchens can be offered by various kitchen showrooms and are fairly easy to compare, so you quickly get a sense of the price and can find your spending limit.

However, we are at least 5,000 euros above our original budget and are a bit worried about starting construction with this in mind.

Do you have any tips or suggestions?
We have already cut back extensively on the appliances or only included what we really need. It’s simply the size that drives the total cost. We know that 10,000 euros won’t be enough, but hopefully, we can keep it under 15,000 euros.

I would also recommend planning a kitchen with IKEA for comparison. All the appliances can be found online, giving you a good basis for comparison. Drawers are expensive but significantly improve the usability of the kitchen, so they should not be omitted. Pull-out pantry cabinets, corner cabinets, carousel units, or roll-out cabinets should only be chosen if absolutely necessary, as they are very costly. The same applies to extras like interior cabinet lighting or a lot of glass. For appliances, I would go with the most affordable options that meet your requirements. However, I would not forgo induction cooktops, pull-out trays in the oven, an oven that is easy to clean (not pyrolytic), and a 0-degree compartment in the refrigerator. Appliances such as microwaves, coffee machines, and steam ovens should be purchased as standalone units, not integrated. But these are probably things you are already aware of. Detailed advice can only be given with a concrete quote and the planned layout.

Is self-assembly an option for you? If so, you can also save a significant amount with some providers.

This statement is quite far, very far from the truth...

If you want to compare, I would say Pino is more like IKEA, but definitely not Nobilia...

Since I have assembled all three myself, I have a fair idea of what I'm talking about...

I assembled and remodeled our old kitchen in the rental apartment.
I wouldn’t assemble a kitchen myself anymore once it reaches a certain size.
I would definitely have it measured and installed by professionals. If it doesn’t fit, the kitchen installer must come up with a solution.
If you make a mistake, it’s your own fault. If the kitchen installer makes a mistake, they have to fix it.
I would definitely have this done by professionals.

Sure, attached are the floor plan and our kitchen layout, basically an L-shaped kitchen:
From the left:
  • Pantry cabinet
  • Roller shutter cabinet
  • Pantry cabinet
  • Appliance cabinet
  • Dishwasher cabinet
  • 60cm (24 inches) drawer unit
  • In the corner, 3 wall cabinets (3 x 40cm (16 inches), possibly 2 x 50cm (20 inches) and 1 x 40cm (16 inches), depending on measurements)

Back side:
  • 60cm (24 inches) drawer unit
  • 60cm (24 inches) waste sorting unit
  • 2 x 1 meter (39 inches) drawer units
  • Freestanding fridge-freezer

Sink is standard stainless steel, 80cm (32 inches) induction cooktop, 90cm (36 inches) extractor hood, standard dishwasher, combination oven with steam function.

The work island consists of 2 x 80cm (32 inches) drawer units, 80cm (32 inches) deep, with a table on the back measuring 80 x 80cm (32 x 32 inches) for 3 seats.
Countertop is laminate.

We want plenty of drawers; a pull-out pantry or corner cabinets are not included. Of course, handleless fronts cost extra; cabinet fronts are glossy magnolia.

We have already reduced a lot, only one combination appliance left; we will keep the fridge-freezer. But it is a fairly long kitchen, which probably drives the price up.

Modern kitchen: white cabinets, wooden countertops, central kitchen island, oven and refrigerator.

Ground floor plan: living room, kitchen, dining, bedroom, bathroom, terrace, balcony, double garage.

Phew, that is really a lot of kitchen... now I can understand the price, but it will definitely look top quality once it's finished.
