Hello,

With my new house almost finished, I am now planning to get a wood stove for the winter. My questions are:

What quality features should a good wood stove have?
What should be considered? Heat output adjusted to the size of the house, etc.
Are inexpensive stoves any good?

Thank you very much!

It really depends on what you want to achieve with your fireplace. If you want to heat your home, you will need one with sufficient power and a somewhat larger size. If you mainly want to create a cozy atmosphere, then a basic DIY-store fireplace will suffice.

If you prefer a fireplace that doesn’t require constant cleaning down to the hinges, the cost will be higher. Looking for one that is room-air independent? Then head straight to a specialist showroom and avoid DIY stores.

No matter what you buy, if you want to use it properly, it will most likely be too large by 99%. [emoji23]

I would recommend going to a specialized retailer and getting professional advice. That’s what I did as well.

But that doesn’t matter for enthusiasts: if a controlled residential ventilation system is installed, the stove should be certified – this is what the certification body (BZSF) uses to decide whether it will be approved without conditions.

P.S. You can get room-air-independent units at hardware stores as well, but not all sizes, dimensions, and features are available there.
