Hello everyone,

Our builder has submitted the application for the house connection to the telecom company (no fiber optic). Cadastral extracts, location, and exact spot for the multi-utility connection have been provided. I would like to know exactly what the telecom does in this process. Does the technician always install the HUP (house connection point), or do they only lay the cable into the house?

This is what the order states:

Formular: Bebauung/Verkabelung, Hausanschluss; Keller Nein, 1 Einheit, 1 Stockwerk.

Thanks and best regards

If you are still getting copper cable, and—based on your picture—the connection is planned with a house entry point at the main connection, this will be an MDF (main distribution frame). The telecom company no longer installs the house transfer point (HTP); that is broadband infrastructure and was already divested when the telecom was still the national postal service. The HTP existed back when broadband lines were still copper (and did not yet have a return channel). The HTP dates back to before the telecommunications reforms, probably when Gscheidle was still in office. It’s surprising what historical technical abbreviations the internet, with its perfect memory, offers to a non-expert 🙂

Quibbling over terms. Ultimately, both refer to the distribution point. HÜB is a more common term used by cable network operators.

The telecom company also installs the distribution point.

If this is a new development area, why is there no fiber optic connection?

The telecom company no longer installs the HÜP; that was broadband technology sold off when the telecom was still called Post. HÜP existed when broadband cables were still copper (and didn’t even have an upstream channel). HÜP came before Bötsch, probably when Gscheidle was still in office. It’s surprising what kind of historical technical abbreviations the internet that never forgets offers to laypeople 🙂

Great, thanks for the background information! On the internet, HÜP is mistakenly used in several places as a synonym for APL.

With fiber optic connections, the handover point (HÜP) is still the standard term used. After that comes the network termination (NT).

I have not seen a single one of the hundreds of supervised internet connections from any provider where there was just a loose cable (whether FTTH/fiber optic, cable/coax, or DSL/copper) sticking out. Don’t worry about that. You are more likely to face other issues.
