Hello,

Our house (built in the 1960s) has a recessed concrete slab leading into the living room. We are now planning to install underfloor heating in the upper area and lay new tiles.

The step up to the living room becomes too high due to the new floor construction, so we want to insert a cantilevered step in the middle. The edge facing the living room will be filled with exposed concrete. The tiles are to be laid right up to this edge.

To prevent the tiles from cracking at the transition between the heated screed and the exposed concrete edge, I plan to connect the exposed concrete edge with rebar to the upper screed slab and decouple it downward. The resulting joint would be hidden by the step. I am attaching a sketch. For the exposed concrete edge, I definitely want to use Dyckerhoff Flowstone and not the heated screed to be applied.

My question is whether this approach is correct or if other options should be considered?

Thank you very much

Michael

A brief addition:

The sketch is not entirely accurate. The reinforcing bars are naturally not meant to hold the exposed concrete and insulation together, but rather the exposed concrete and the screed of the floor. Therefore, they should be positioned one layer higher in the sketch.
