ᐅ Are cracks in window sills normal?

After returning from our vacation, we visited our construction site for the first time today. In the meantime, the internal window sills have been installed. We were shocked by the many cracks.... Of course, it is a natural material, but it really doesn’t look good. Is this normal and something we just have to accept?

Another question: Our front entrance door has already been installed, even though the interior plastering hasn’t been done yet. We have already noticed some scratches. The door wasn’t covered at all to prevent damage. The interior work is only just beginning, and different tradespeople are coming and going. How was this handled in your experience, and who is responsible for any potential damage?

Thank you for your opinions. We’re a bit upset with the carpenter right now.

No, usually not. Plaster and screed create some space. The door is installed only at the very end and then adjusted slightly.

In my case, it was an exception due to a misunderstanding with the construction manager. Normally, these would be installed before the interior and exterior plaster.

That’s how I know it, too.
And the electrician clearly said he won’t install any wiring before the house can be secured. Not just in our case, but always. And cables always go in before plaster.

You are speaking generally about "doors" 😉 .
No, we responded specifically to the original poster’s question, explicitly about the front door. You are the one being general.

Thank you for your opinions. The carpenter is now removing the door again, and a temporary solution will be installed.
The windowsills are still under review; I am not willing to accept such cracks. I don’t think I could live with that. I will keep you updated.

I’d like to reassure you regarding the window sills... we’ve been living with these kinds of “cracks” for 5 years. I have noticed them, but never to the extent that I considered having them replaced. You actually have to look very closely to see the cracks. The sills are stable and don’t seem “fragile” at all. One shelf (photo) is placed on the half-height room divider, and the kids are always climbing on it... absolutely no problem.

I quickly took some photos...

Personally, I find it unacceptable. It’s like buying a new car that’s completely scratched. I would not accept that myself.

We had similar cracks in about half of our window sills. We took photos and sent them to the site manager, who then arranged for their replacement. This was done quite quickly and without any problems. Of course, at first there was some hesitation and remarks like "Hmm, hmm, that’s how it’s supposed to be." ;-) However, it’s not supposed to be that way, and they accepted this in the end.
