Hello everyone,

Our flat roof needs renovation. It is covered with roofing felt sheets, and the top layer has cracks and distortions.

I want to seal the roof with a special self-adhesive roofing membrane, but for that the surface obviously needs to be smooth. Recently, a representative of the above-mentioned adhesive membrane visited me and said: it’s quite simple — remove loose parts, pour flowing screed to level the cracks directly over the old roofing felt, and then stick the new roofing membrane on top.

What do you think about this? Can it really be done that easily?

Somehow, I have a bad feeling about this because the old roofing felt underneath the screed will still “move,” which might cause cracks to reappear in the screed. Also, the roof already has a slope toward the gutter, which I would probably ruin by applying the flowing screed.

Thank you in advance for your answers,

Hello,

First, you need to remove the old membrane layers and create a proper layered structure. If you want to carry out the renovation yourself, I would recommend using torch-on membranes—they are easier to work with. It also depends on whether the space below is occupied. Flat roofs are not that simple because they must be waterproof. So be cautious about the advice you receive, as many people are just trying to sell something. If you have any questions, just get in touch or send a picture by email. Merry Christmas.
