Hello everyone! I am considering changing the color of one of my Billy bookshelves and am looking for an affordable way to cover or repaint the current surface without having to completely sand or repaint the shelf. I am especially interested in which materials or products work well to create a smooth and durable finish that differs from the typical expensive furniture coatings. Does anyone have experience with such DIY solutions for Billy bookshelves? What type of paint, spray film, or adhesive film would you recommend that is cost-effective yet still delivers a good result? I am also open to any tips on the best approach to avoid a blotchy or uneven finish. Thanks in advance!

I’m curious whether these films also adhere well to the smooth melamine coating on the BILLY shelfMost self-adhesive films are specifically designed for smooth surfaces like these. However, proper preparation, as mentioned before, and careful application without air bubbles are crucial. It’s best to use a squeegee or a credit card to press it down firmly.

The edges are actually the weak pointI agree with that. You can also use transparent furniture tape to reinforce the edges if you expect heavy wear.
My tip: If you want to cover the back panel of the shelf as well, this panel usually has a rougher surface; check the film’s adhesion specifically for that.

What do you think about affordable spray films, like those from paint shops?Spray films don’t hold up well if the shelf is frequently bumped against furniture or walls. They’re okay as a budget solution but not durable in the long term. If you want something low-maintenance, traditional films or classic paint are better.
