The offer from our architect included an uninsulated basement. As a precaution, we have now decided to insulate the basement. For the insulation of the slab on grade, CHF 56 per m2 (10 cm XPS) was estimated. The perimeter insulation amounts to CHF 28 per m2 (10 cm XPS). I have two questions regarding this:
1. When searching online, I found current costs for slab insulation (including labor) of EUR 25 per m2. With an exchange rate of 1.5, this would be about CHF 38. Therefore, CHF 56 seems quite high for Switzerland as well. Are CHF 56 typical market prices?
2. On another page, it is mentioned that if the slab is insulated, the basement ceiling insulation can be omitted. Is this correct? If so, our architect should include cost reductions which have not yet appeared.
Thank you very much for your feedback.

MODERATOR22 Nov 2011 12:57Hello,
I’ll start from the end: If all exterior basement walls are insulated, insulation of the ceiling between the basement and the ground floor is not necessary.
Regarding the cost of insulating the floor slab, it’s important to distinguish whether the insulation is installed before pouring the concrete (i.e., between the slab and the ground) or above the floor slab but below the basement floor.
The specification "10cm XPS" suggests insulation below the slab, which is more expensive than insulating on top of the slab.
Labor and material costs cannot be directly compared using currency converters; I am not familiar with the situation in Switzerland but assume that labor costs are higher there than in Germany. Additionally, due to EU regulations, relatively inexpensive companies from Eastern Germany can also operate in Germany.
Perhaps you could find a German company for this service. It would be best to discuss this again with your architect, as it also helps build mutual trust.
