Dear forum community,

I received a quote from the painter who currently charges a total of 15.50 EUR per square meter (sq. m) for filling, priming, applying fleece, painting, and smoothing. Before I get worried, I wanted to ask if this price is reasonable or not. The individual prices are:
Ceiling filling 3.90
Priming 1.20
Fleece application 5.20
White painting 4.05
Smoothing 1.90

Thanks for your answers

Get one or two more quotes from other companies: that way you’ll know if the offer is fair and competitive.

Here is a current quote for:
Ceiling surfaces, removal of old wallpaper and glue-based paints, repair of major plaster damage, priming, filling with gypsum-based compound, sanding, re-priming, painting fleece, two coats of interior dispersion paint in white ---> 16.50 Euros/m² (16.50 Euros per square meter)

Wall surfaces the same, but with light to medium interior latex paint, color of choice ---> 18.50 Euros/m² (18.50 Euros per square meter)

Thank you very much. Then it more or less fits.

Filling for 3.90 and priming for 1.90 is very cheap. The rest fits.

To explain: The priming for 1.20 € includes labor and material costs. Material costs are about 3.00 € per 1.0 liter (0.26 gallons), consumption about 0.25 liter (0.07 gallons), so 0.75 € per m² (10.8 sq ft) for materials alone. That leaves about 0.45 € for labor. With about 40.00 € per hour, one minute costs 0.67 €. This means the painter can only spend about 40 seconds per m², including all setup time. A living room ceiling of 30 m² (323 sq ft) must therefore be primed within 20 minutes. Travel time and so on are not considered here. Congratulations to the painting company if they have such efficient workers.
