Good morning, dear building community 🙂

Since the building regulations in our municipality require a rainwater cistern, I wanted to ask what costs I should expect? Installing or burying this system shouldn’t be too difficult, so I’m sure I could do it myself.

Our plot is 379m² (4,077 ft²) with the following building regulation:

3.9 Facilities for collecting and retaining rainwater (§ 74 (3) No. 2 State Building Code)

3.9.1 Facilities for collecting and retaining rainwater to allow delayed discharge into the separated drainage system must be provided on the properties (e.g. green roofs, retention cisterns, greywater use, etc.).

3.9.2 Rainwater from commercial yard areas with typical industrial surface loading (surface type ≥ F4, see guidelines for handling rainwater in urban areas – LUBW 2005) may only be discharged into the public stormwater sewer if it has been sufficiently pre-treated. The plans for rainwater treatment must be submitted to the local water authority to obtain the necessary permits.

3.9.3 The discharge of process wastewater into the public stormwater sewer is not permitted.

3.9.4 Outdoor areas where hazardous substances are handled (e.g. loading and unloading areas) must be sealed with liquid-tight surfaces according to the generally accepted rules of technology. These must be connected to the sanitary sewer or covered. Whether a permeable surface is allowed can be estimated based on the assessment procedure in the guidelines for handling rainwater in urban areas.

NOTE: Drainage systems must be installed according to the generally accepted rules of technology and require approval by the municipality.

Hello,

Our retention cistern with a total volume of 9100 liters (2400 gallons) and a retention capacity of 6500 liters (1700 gallons) cost me €2129.
We did the excavation ourselves.
The cistern is made of concrete and was delivered from the factory with the lid already installed.

Hello Waldemar,
the topic of cisterns has already been discussed several times. Often the discussion revolves around whether they are useful or not – which in your case is not necessary due to regulations.
However, during those discussions, prices for various sizes of cisterns and methods for calculating the required size were often covered.
Just try searching for it in the forum, and you will surely find something suitable.

Hello Jochen,

yes, I have already read those as well, but in my case, it is due to the building regulations, which is why it is not just a standard cistern but a retention cistern or system for collecting and holding back water for delayed release into the separate water system.

My home construction company estimated about €4000 (external company) and reported that they had a case nearby where, due to the building regulations, the final cost was even €8500 (2 pumps, flow control, and buoyancy protection).

Yes, but no one here will be able to tell you whether the 4k case or the 8.5k case applies to you.

The building regulations only state what is mentioned above, so how am I supposed to know which cistern to choose?

As far as I understand, the following cistern should be sufficient for my needs.
