Hello Forum,

we have received a maintenance offer for the Vaillant Therm plus VWL 75/6 A and find the price quite high. They are asking for nearly €360. I was expecting around €250.

The following services will be performed:
- general condition inspection
- visual and functional check including safety and control devices
- verification of system settings
- inspection of the water level and pre-pressure of the membrane expansion vessel
- inspection of the domestic hot water heater for leaks and function, including checking the magnesium anode (if present)
- inspection of the fan, cleaning and removal of ingested debris, and checking the condensate drain
- inspection and cleaning of the air heat exchanger
- function check of the controller (clock setting, etc.)

The house and heating system are located in Berlin... if that’s relevant.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

The price roughly matches the amount my general contractor’s former heating technician had estimated for the maintenance. I also find it too high, but it seems to be in line with the market.

I’m also in Berlin, and the same air-to-water heat pump is supposed to be installed.

Thank you all for the responses. It seems this is already common in the market. Incredible. That basically makes heating about $30 more expensive.

Do it yourself for the first 5 years because of the warranty. If you check everything carefully every time, as @halmi suggested, you can then really do it yourself annually and only have a professional do it every 5 years. After 20-25 years, you will probably need a new heat pump anyway.

In general, this is a farce and, in my opinion, just a way to make money. I have already had a few technicians come by because of initial issues with our air-to-water heat pump, and each one confirmed to me that these units are maintenance-free except for cleaning and visual inspections.

What actually breaks on these units? Either the circuit board, the compressor, or the refrigerant circuit develops a leak. None of these components are "serviced" or can really be maintained, and a leaking refrigerant circuit is only detected when the machine displays an error message.

We purchased the extended warranty through AI for 5 years, costing a one-time fee of 280€ net. The warranty terms, and also in explicit written inquiry, say nothing about regularly scheduled maintenance. The general contractor only provides a two-year warranty on the unit anyway; if the heat pump fails after 3-4 years, you are left on your own either way.

I will have the same warranty coverage for the first 5 years. I’m also curious about the costs.

What I fear most is that the technician will reset my heating curve back to factory settings.

But step 1 is getting the heat pump installed. Step 2 is commissioning it, and at some point in winter, I can start thinking about the settings. Then, a year later, I can take a closer look at what adjustments have actually been made.

Overall, it’s a nice money generator from the general contractor and heating installer combination. If the refrigerant leaks, you won’t notice it during maintenance anyway. When that happens, you’d only find out with or without maintenance.

First, clarify whether you actually have a 5-year warranty; a look at your contract will help here. Heating is always a special topic and, as far as I know, does not automatically fall under the five-year warranty.
