Francovin9 Jul 2024 14:27Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to modify my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets to make them childproof while maintaining or even improving their functionality. I am particularly interested in how to alter the typical Metod cabinets and fronts so they are difficult for small children to access, without having to significantly damage the original construction.
I am mainly thinking about locks, soft-closing mechanisms, possibly installing internal components that are hard to reach, as well as advice on child-safe handles or handle alternatives. Additionally, I would like to know which solutions have proven effective in preserving storage capacity despite the modifications.
Does anyone have specific experience or best practices for such a modification? Are there perhaps modular solutions or accessories that can be added?
Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions!

There are several practical approaches to address your concern.
- Child safety is primarily achieved through specialized locking mechanisms such as magnetic child locks, which are easy to install and keep fronts closed without causing permanent damage.
- Soft-closing mechanisms, including soft-close hinges from Ikea or third-party suppliers, provide smooth operation and reduce the risk of finger pinching.
- Handles: Smooth, flush-mounted handles or even handleless fronts (push-to-open systems) prevent children’s hands from getting caught.
- Interior compartmentalization allows for storing hazardous items at the back and out of reach. Additional drawers or shelves can be added modularly, using Ikea universal accessories if desired.
Also, ensure that child safety locks can be removed at any time if adult access is required.

Their advantage is that they can be opened from the outside with a magnetic key without using tools. This way, the kitchen remains fully functional for adults, while little hands stay safely out of reach.
Furthermore, I would like to add that soft-close hinges not only reduce noise but also minimize the risk of children pinching their fingers.

Interior compartmentalization offers the possibility to store dangerous utensils far back and out of reach. This is an important point that is often overlooked. In my experience, installing additional inner boxes or inserts that can be fixed further back also helps.
A personal tip: The combination of child-safe locks on lower cabinets and using elevated drawers or tall cabinets for sharp knives has proven effective for us. This keeps the kitchen both functional and safe at the same time.
I would recommend installing magnetic locks on the lower cabinets while using push-to-open handles for the upper cabinets. This way, the most important areas are locked away from children, while adults still have easy access.
Additionally, Ikea’s own accessories, such as internal drawers, work well to move hazardous items to the back. A sturdy edge protector can also help prevent injuries.
