Prince7Good morning everyone, I am currently planning the renovation of my kitchen using Ikea Metod cabinets and want to make it as child-friendly and safe as possible. Specifically, I am interested in how to equip and modify the cabinets, drawers, and wall units to prevent small children from easily accessing dangerous items or chemicals. I am particularly focused on the following aspects: sturdy child safety locks for doors and drawers, selection of child-safe materials and surfaces, as well as recommended practical additions such as special inserts or locks that integrate well with the Metod system. How do you handle this? Are there specific products or modifications that have proven effective without making daily use more difficult? I look forward to your tips and experiences, as I have not found detailed guides that specifically address Ikea Metod and child safety. Thanks in advance!
Hello Prince7, I completely understand how important safety is to you. In my experience, Ikea Metod provides a solid basic structure, but you often need to get creative with child safety measures. For example, I installed magnetic child locks on the lowest cabinets. While they are not 100% childproof, they offer a good compromise for us. It is also important that the handles are child-safe – rounded or recessed handles prevent children from injuring themselves. One common challenge with Metod is integrating additional safety features without making opening the cabinets too difficult. I often wonder myself how to best organize this without complicating daily use.
Hello everyone, I would like to share a brief guide on how to make Ikea Metod kitchen units child-friendly by modifying and equipping them:
- Door and drawer locks: Use magnetic or mechanical locks that are attached inside the units and are difficult for children to open.
- Drawers: Use internal organizers to separate dangerous items (knives, cleaning agents) and store them in higher drawers.
- Materials: Metod surfaces are usually melamine-coated and non-toxic, but it is still advisable to regularly deburr the corners and, if necessary, add edge protectors.
- Wall mounting: Secure all cabinets firmly to the wall to prevent tipping hazards.
- Handles & edges: Replace with rounded, child-safe handles or handleless openings, and add rubber edges on sharp spots.
Common mistakes include improper or loose installation of the locks. Also, accessibility for adults should not be restricted too much to avoid impairing everyday kitchen use. I recommend adding supplementary, flexibly mounted safety solutions.
I hope this helps with your planning.

Hello Prince7, I think your topic is really important! 🙂 We modified our Metod kitchen by adding soft-close mechanisms to the drawers at the bottom, so they don’t slam shut – this helps prevent pinching injuries. We also installed child safety locks on all the cabinet doors; they open with a click but are practically impossible for our little ones to bypass! Definitely use outlet covers and store any chemicals in high cabinets, as it’s easy to forget. My advice is to take it step by step. With a bit of patience, it works really well!

I use simple child safety locks that are mounted on the inside of the doors for Metod. That is a really practical solution. Additionally, I would recommend using sturdy and well-tested child safety locks that are easy to understand. It’s important not to underestimate the need for precise installation on Ikea Metod furniture to prevent children from easily tampering with the locks themselves.

Wall anchoring: Securely fix all cabinets to the wall to prevent tipping hazards. I agree with this – especially with small children, this is one of the essential safety measures that must not be overlooked. It also significantly reduces the overall risk of accidents.
Finally, a note: It’s worthwhile to regularly check the safety locks and replace them if there are any signs of wear. You should consider not only the installation but also the durability over time.
