ᐅ Controlled residential ventilation in winter, dry air—what can be done about it?

Hello everyone,

how is it with your mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery? At the moment, we have a humidity level of 30 - 32% and unfortunately, that’s not very comfortable. Is it the same for you?
We have a Vallox system with heat recovery, and there is an option to upgrade to an enthalpy heat exchanger. However, that costs around €1000 and I’m not sure if it really makes a difference.

Right now, I’m quite disappointed with the mechanical ventilation system. In winter, the air is dry, and in summer, during the heat, you don’t get fresh air into the house either.

I’d like to hear about your experiences.

It also helps to hang laundry to dry instead of using the dryer. Additionally, in winter, I like to ventilate the bathroom by opening the door to the living area after showering rather than opening the window.

Heating less also helps – but that feels a bit old-fashioned.

Due to the above-mentioned reason, I want to offer the enthalpy variant directly instead of the Zehnder Comfoair Q350 TR.

How much more is this variant allowed to cost?

Hmm, actually nothing, but the usual surcharge is about 500-600.

Thanks for the information. I will get a quote and then share the details here. Retrofitting costs about 900€ (approximately 900 euros).

A membrane is definitely more expensive than a piece of sheet metal. I think it’s quite reasonable to offer a standard heat exchanger at a lower price than one that allows water vapor to pass through using a membrane. Conversely, the enthalpy heat exchanger option must be more expensive. The exact figures can be debated, of course.

Simple crossflow heat exchangers are usually not made from a single sheet of metal either.

Basic plate heat exchanger:

Large blue cylindrical container with ribbed surface in metal frame and protective padding.

The same one as an enthalpy heat exchanger:

Multi-part rectangular air filter with folded filter media and metal frame.
