Hello,

I would like to introduce myself briefly since this is my first post in the forum (I have already read a lot and received many answers to the numerous questions that a building owner has). So, my husband and I want to start building our house later this year. We live in Lower Saxony, the plot is reserved, and we will use solid construction. We are working with an architect.

Now, to my question:
When building solid walls (for example, with Poroton) and insulating with ETICS (external thermal insulation composite system), I always thought that the masonry (for example, the Poroton brick) is placed directly on the edge of the foundation slab so that the slab and the masonry align flush. The insulation is then applied to the masonry (glued, screwed, or however). This means the insulation more or less hangs freely and does not "rest" on the foundation slab. Please correct me if I’m wrong!

Now my question: We want to clad the ground floor with facing bricks. Our wall construction would be Poroton, ETICS, cavity, and facing brick. I am now wondering what the facing brick wall rests on? Or do you move the entire masonry inward in this setup so that the last "layer," meaning the facing bricks, still stand on the foundation slab? I hope I’ve made my question somewhat clear. Thank you very much in advance for your answers.

Regards,
Tatze

Hello Tatze,
I can only speak about my own build so far. The wall structure is Ytong, insulation, air cavity, and brick facing. The brick facing will still rest on the foundation slab (which was sized to the external dimensions of the house!). I received a good, schematic illustration of the wall structure from a developer when requesting a quote. May I ask where in Lower Saxony you are building?

Hello Danie,

Yes, I have now also received confirmation from our architect that the facing bricks are still placed on the concrete slab. It is also the case that the concrete slab is adjusted to the exterior dimensions and not (as I had feared) that the entire exterior wall is shifted inward, reducing the living area. We are building in Celle district. How about you?

So also in Lower Saxony, nice (=
I’m building in the district of Cuxhaven.
Do you already have the building permit / planning permission? I’m curious to see how other people’s construction sites are progressing...^^
Regards, Danie
