I am currently renovating parts of my house. As part of this, I want to update the intercom system. A newer video door entry system is to be installed.
The current intercom is wired with a 4*2*0.8 cable.
Question 1: What type of video intercom system can be connected here? 2-wire or 4-wire?
Question 2: Is there a wiring diagram showing how the old 4*2*0.8 cable should be connected for a 2-wire or 4-wire system?
Thank you for your help

Answer to Question 2: How to turn on the system is explained in the manufacturer’s manual. It is often also available online. You can also call the manufacturer; they are usually happy to help.
When you mention 2*4, I assume you mean 8 conductors, similar to a LAN cable. In any case, the wires are sufficient (thus answer to Question 1: both work, but do 2-wire video intercom systems even exist?).
The question remains about shielding. If you still have the option, I would recommend at least Cat6a. Video intercom systems feed into the network via the IP gateway (see respective manufacturer), then transmit, for example, video to a cordless phone like FritzFon (using DECT) or to the door station.

Paulchen24125 Sep 2017 11:47Hello Kaspatoo, thanks for your information. That already helps me a lot.
Yes, the currently installed cable, to which the old door opener system is connected, has 8 conductors. If I decide, for example, on a 4-wire version, that means, as I understand it, that 4 conductors remain "unused" and are not connected. Is that correct?

Yes, as long as the audio station does not require two additional wires and possibly to control a lamp, which would also need wiring.
As I said, I would look for a product that you like, contact the manufacturer by email or phone, and then proceed once all questions are clarified.

Hello,
B&J offers the Welcome System (you can search for it online). It is a digital 2-wire connection that handles everything. This is ideal for retrofitting...
On the B&J website, there is also a configurator where you can design your system, and it automatically generates the corresponding wiring diagram.
Regards,
Tom
