Hello everyone,

I still need to build a concrete block retaining wall. At this location, I want to avoid using wall discs for cost reasons. To fill the blocks, I roughly estimate needing around 1.8 m³ (2.4 yd³) of concrete. Realistically, how much can two people manage to pour in one day if I rent a 140-liter (37-gallon) cement mixer from the hardware store and use dry concrete mix in bags? Unfortunately, I have no experience with this quantity or using a cement mixer. So far, we have only mixed smaller amounts in a bucket.

More like 4 big bags of sand plus cement.
Or 150 bags of 25 kg (55 lbs) each.

Plan for it to take two days with two people.

I would also have the material delivered in big bags from the building materials supplier. Just picking up and loading 150 bags yourself, plus disposing of the bags, would be a hassle.

A few extra dollars (around 60?) for freight costs and a lot of saved labor. It would still probably be cheaper than buying in bags.

I actually meant having the ready-mixed mortar delivered in big bags. That way, you don’t even need a trailer or any additional logistics.

Another option:
I hired my excavator operator. He had a hopper with an integrated mixer for filling the formwork blocks, attached to his excavator. Super convenient. Gravel and dry concrete were loaded on the truck bed.
2.5 m³ (3.3 yd³) of concrete were filled in just under 2 hours.

You can manage 1.8 cubic meters in one day. However, I wouldn’t recommend using premixed concrete in bags. Instead, order loose gravel and cement in 25kg (55 lb) bags. Shoveling it directly into the mixer is much easier than constantly lifting heavy bags and pouring them in. Pour the cement into a bucket first, then shovel it into the mixer from there. The most convenient option is actually ready-mix concrete delivered in big bags. That usually isn’t much more expensive.
