Hello dear forum members,
Next to my house, there is an old wooden barn that I am currently renovating. Now the question about the flooring comes up. A wooden plank floor would fit well and I could install it myself or with my father (a retired carpenter).
However, since I also distill spirits and have my distillation equipment in the room, there is a chance that mash might spill onto the floor. Additionally, the room is intended to be used as a party space, and wood flooring is not really ideal for that.
A friend of mine (a screed installer) recommended a concrete floor, which would also look quite good visually. He explained that screed is more expensive due to the extensive grinding required, whereas polished concrete requires less grinding and can be more cost-effective.
The current floor is also a very rough concrete surface. I plan to add 3cm (1 inch) of insulation on top of it, followed by an 8cm (3 inch) concrete screed layer.
Do I need reinforcement in this case? The floor only needs to support the interior furnishings and no additional loads such as walls.
What practical and cost-effective alternatives to a concrete floor would you recommend?
Thanks for your opinions!
Best regards
