lesmue79Sorry if this is a silly question, but I’m struggling a bit with this topic...
Here’s the situation: our house stands on a 25 cm (10 inch) concrete slab, which in turn is laid on 10 cm (4 inch) of Styrofoam insulation. This means my finished floor level is about 50 cm (20 inch) above the surrounding ground level (assuming a 15 cm (6 inch) floor build-up including screed, floor covering, etc.). The ground level around the house is basically the construction pit that was leveled with gravel to set up the scaffolding.
For the terrace area, I want to place curbstones or L-shaped concrete blocks in a concrete bed as edging. I would then fill the enclosed area with gravel and fine aggregate, compacting it up to the finished floor level, and finally lay the terrace slabs.
My problem/question is: do I need to excavate deeper for the foundation of the curbstones or L-blocks? I have often heard that you need to dig down about 80 cm (31 inch) to build frost-proof foundations. Or is it sufficient to simply set the edging—whether curbstones, formwork blocks, or L-shaped stones—directly in a thick enough concrete bed at the existing ground level?
Later, I plan to backfill the outside of the edging mostly with topsoil and seed it with grass, letting it gradually blend out towards the property boundary.
I hope I haven’t made this too complicated...
