ManuelaEHello,
I have a small problem. We built a small extension onto an older building, creating an opening where there was previously a window. Since the sandstone frame of the window posed some structural challenges, the extension was built before the frame was removed. Long story short, the extension’s masonry now protrudes further into the room than the original building. In other words, there is a step of 5cm (2 inches) at the first junction and another 5cm (2 inches) at the next.
Since everything will be plastered at the same time, I need to bring the masonry to the same height. Building up 5cm (2 inches) with brickwork will be difficult. I had the idea to glue and anchor Wedi or Styrodur (extruded polystyrene) boards to fill the gap, then level the rest with plaster. I already have both materials on site for this small area.
However, the heating engineer advised against this due to the different materials involved. He suggested making a kind of formwork with a board and gradually building up with stone pieces and mortar.
I am really unsure at the moment. The area is only 40cm x 250cm (16 inches x 98 inches) with two steps. I hope for helpful advice, even though it’s hard for me to explain properly without a picture. Thank you very much.

Yes, it is really hard to understand what is meant here, especially since I am not familiar with the term "Gewände" (door or window surround). However, I would probably use the Styrofoam boards or Ytong (aerated concrete blocks). Pieces of stone and mortar sound like "doesn’t want to and can’t." Or as my husband would say, "Peter Lustig."

In general, I would probably tend to use Styrofoam boards, or formwork and pour concrete. Ytong blocks are also available in this thickness, and I actually have enough left over...
