Hello everyone,
I’m planning to combine my IKEA Kallax shelving system with elements from the Trofast series and wonder if that works well at all. Kallax is more stable and has square compartments, while Trofast is more flexible with its storage boxes in different sizes – so I’m thinking of a combination to optimize both storage space and usability.
Do any of you have experience or tips on how to sensibly combine Kallax and Trofast? Do the dimensions match well, or are there issues with stability or assembly? I’m mainly looking for practical advice, such as whether Trofast boxes fit easily into Kallax compartments or if special fasteners are needed.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello rafail,
Trofast boxes do not fit directly into Kallax compartments in terms of width. The Kallax compartments are about 33cm x 33cm (13 inches x 13 inches), while Trofast boxes are usually wider. You might be able to place the systems next to each other, but they won’t fit inside one another.
For stability, it’s better to keep them separate.

Kallax compartments have an internal depth of about 39 cm (15 inches) and a height and width of approximately 33 cm (13 inches), while standard Trofast boxes are about 35 cm (14 inches) wide, which means they do not easily fit into a Kallax compartment.
A practical solution could be to use Trofast as a standalone storage unit next to the Kallax or place the boxes on Trofast frames to use them flexibly. Combining them within one shelving system is not intended based on the dimensions and could cause stability issues.
Also, from an aesthetic perspective, different product lines do not always harmonize well unless a deliberate contrast in style is desired.
For optimal storage space, I recommend using both systems separately according to their function and available space.
Hello rafail,
I understand that you want to combine the practical advantages of both systems, especially when you want to store different items. I tried that myself once and found it a bit fiddly in the end.
That worked best for me. The look is different, but this way I can handle different box sizes flexibly without having to modify or adjust them awkwardly. Maybe this could be a solution for you as well?
If you want to experiment, perhaps try first how the boxes perform on Kallax shelves or with a small spacer piece, but don’t expect a perfect fit. I hope this helps you a bit! 🙂
