Hello dear forum members,

I have encountered some challenges while insulating the reveals of my balcony door on the inside with calcium silicate boards and urgently need your help.

First, after chiseling off the plaster, I unexpectedly found a wood wool substrate with four large holes, which I filled with PU foam. Secondly, there is a 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) thick layer of mortar on the top that is loose and therefore probably no longer stable enough to support the calcium silicate boards. I renewed the PU foam on the sides, but now I suspect that even with a smoothing coat and sealing tape, I cannot create a diffusion-tight transition to the outside on the wood wool surface itself. Unless there are objections, I still plan to apply a smoothing layer with flexible adhesive on the transition from wood wool to PU foam and then attach sealing tape up to the window’s plastic frame before installing the calcium silicate boards. Does this make sense, or would you recommend a different approach?

Can I remove the loose mortar layer on top and replace it with an XPS board without risking mold growth? If yes, how should I bond/skim/seal it? And is there anything I should consider when attaching the calcium silicate boards over these panels?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.
