Hello,

is it possible and practical to combine an air source heat pump with a hydronic fireplace?

Best regards

Possible, yes. What you mean by sensible would need to be defined.

If sensible = cost-effective, then no.
If sensible = optimal for clean heat pump operation, then no.

The background is that we want a wood stove in the living/dining area.

Usually, the wood stove could support/relieve the heat pump when it gets really cold in winter, right?

As a layperson, this makes sense at first, but I would recommend looking into the principle of a modulating heat pump.

Generally speaking, the wood stove could support/relieve the heat pump when it gets really cold in winter, right?

That’s complete nonsense. Ask yourself why nobody does this. It’s technically very complex and also extremely expensive.

There is no reason to do something like that.

You can do that independently from the rest of the heating system. It doesn’t matter what you install.

That’s possible, but without the water-connected extras. Those made sense in older buildings, etc. Since energy-saving regulations have come into effect and houses are built accordingly, you don’t really need that anymore.
