Hello everyone,

We are in the final planning phase of our house and are now wondering if, for our planned cold roof, two small roof windows for cross-ventilation are necessary.
Our client advisor says yes, but the general contractor considers them unnecessary.
How did you handle this in your projects?

Good luck, Julia

Then ventilation must be provided. This will result in a warm roof.

Is there a standard for this? Are windows allowed in that location? I don’t really expect to ventilate there daily during winter.

According to the standards, definitely not – and since you don’t go up there often, windows are pointless. It’s better to drill core holes on the gable walls and let the air flow through there.

Or you can observe the situation first – the attic isn’t plastered or sealed in your case, so there is already airflow by default.

I will set up a data logger with temperature and humidity sensors up there and monitor it.

Okay, thanks for the tip – I’ll probably do that as well.
Exactly – nothing has been plastered.

We do have a ventilated ridge, the building supervisor said.

Shouldn't the moisture be able to escape through the wood fiber boards/roof insulation and the vapor-permeable underlay membrane?
