Hello,

we have built a garage (sand-lime brick) onto our house (timber frame). There is now direct access to the garage from the side entrance of the house.

Between the garage and the house, there is a gap about 5cm (2 inches) wide. Both the garage and the house will be faced with brick veneer.

Where the passage from the house to the garage is, this gap is obviously a problem and should be sealed. If the garage interior is going to be plastered, this area should be plastered as well. What is the best way to close this gap?

Best regards,

Ask the person who will be applying the plaster. The task will be to ensure that it does not crack after six months ;-) Let them choose the substrate...

He already explained it to me a few weeks ago. But somehow it didn’t really stick in my memory. He wanted to close the gap with some kind of metal strip (?) and then apply something else over it. I thought it might be a good idea to get a second opinion.
If I were doing it myself, I would probably have used Fermacell...

He might mean expanded metal lath. The plaster should then be separated from the wood. This can work and is often done. Otherwise, a plaster carrier board (Wedi/Pecidur, or something similar) is glued onto masonry and possibly screwed into the wood. A plaster stop bead on a timber frame with mesh. Fermacell or similar boards will also get the job done.
