Hello everyone,

In our new build (condominium) the scope of work specifies that the walls should be plastered and finished to Q2 level.

Since I prefer the look of a "smooth" painted wall, I would like to have the surface skimmed (smoothed) instead of being textured. The goal is to achieve a finish like the one in the attached picture.

Experiences with painting Q2 finishes seem to be very mixed. Would you recommend going up to Q3 instead? Can the look in the picture be achieved by smoothing the plaster?

Thanks in advance for your support
Ingo

If you want smooth walls without using wallpaper liner, you will probably need to go for a Q4 finish.

I mean, there are different quality levels for a reason. Achieving perfectly smooth and even walls requires the highest level of effort.

We paid around 4000 euros for Q3, and then my husband spent several more days filling and sanding...

Have the standard version installed, and if you don’t like it, the painter can apply a full surface skim coat.
Alternatively, have a test room done and decide afterward.

The delivered qualities simply vary too much, no matter what is stated on them.

I also considered setting the standard first and then deciding, but in this multi-family building, the same process is used for everyone, and materials are supplied, for example, via silo. If I were to request my preferences later, it could delay the progress again. The extra steps required to change from Q2 to Q3 would mean another appointment with the plasterers, and it’s uncertain whether everything can be arranged “at short notice.” I don’t have experience with that.

My gut feeling is: “Yes, then we’ll come back in 3 weeks; before that, we don’t have the materials or the time.”
