Hello everyone,

I have some IKEA Malm furniture at home that I want to clean regularly without causing damage or leaving unsightly marks. So far, I’ve managed to avoid some mistakes, but since the surface is rather sensitive, I wanted to ask the community:

What mistakes should I definitely avoid when cleaning Malm furniture? I’m especially interested in which cleaning products should not be used, how to prevent scratches, and if there are any special tips for surface care.

I’ve read that harsh cleaners or too much water can damage the surface, but what about home remedies or microfiber cloths?

I’m looking forward to experienced advice, preferably based on personal experience!

Hi lowalker,

Great question, as these Malm furniture pieces are true classics in many homes 😊! What I always say: Less is more when it comes to cleaning.

Harsh cleaners or abrasive sponges often cause problems because they can wrinkle or dull the surface. Microfiber cloths are a really good choice, but make sure they are truly clean – otherwise, they just spread dirt!

You should definitely avoid bleach, abrasive cleaners, and alcohol-based products. They can damage the finish.

It’s better to use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap or an all-purpose cleaner. Also, be careful not to use too much water – the wood can absorb it.

To prevent scratches, wipe lightly and follow the grain direction.

I’ve heard some people swear by furniture polish, but I don’t think it’s really necessary for Malm pieces 🙂

Good luck, and remember: Don’t overdo it – the furniture will thank you with a long lifespan!

Hello lowalker,

I’d like to add some structured tips to help you proceed in a clear and focused way:

1. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents: As mentioned earlier, do not use bleach, strong solvents, or abrasive substances. These can damage the lacquer or film on Malm surfaces.

2. Avoid applying too much moisture: Damp wiping is fine, but the furniture should not get soaked. Water can seep into joints and potentially damage or cause the wood to swell.

3. Cleaning routine:
- First, remove dust with a dry, soft cloth or a duster.
- Gently treat stains using a lightly dampened microfiber cloth.
- For stubborn stains, use gentle, pH-neutral cleaners.

4. Avoid scratches:
- Do not use rough cloths or sponges.
- Avoid rubbing hard objects on the surface.

5. Maintenance: If you want to keep the shine, some recommend special furniture polish suitable for lacquered surfaces; however, test it first on an inconspicuous area.

This is very important because dirty cloths provide small dirt particles that can easily cause scratches.

In summary: Immediate protection from moisture and the choice of gentle cleaning agents are key.

If you like, I can also prepare a list of recommended products for you.

I hope this helps!

Hello lowalker,

To answer your question thoroughly, it would be helpful to have some more details about the type of Malm furniture you have.

Are they the classic ones with a laminate surface or the painted Malm furniture?

The differences in cleaning and care are quite significant. I will focus on the most commonly used type with the laminate finish, as this is often more challenging to maintain:

- Laminate surfaces are especially sensitive to solvents and water. The laminate can dissolve, swell, or in the worst case, peel off.
- Never use abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals (e.g., acetone, alcohol), or corrosive substances.
- For cleaning, a soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water works best, optionally with a drop of neutral dish soap, but really only diluted and used sparingly.

Exactly, cleaners that are too acidic or alkaline damage the laminate coating.

- Important: Wipe the surfaces dry immediately after cleaning to prevent any moisture from remaining.

- Scratches on laminate surfaces are particularly stubborn: avoid hard or abrasive cleaning tools, such as rough sponges or brushes.

- Avoid direct sunlight after cleaning, as moist laminate can be damaged by heat.

- For small scratches, fine polishing furniture wax may sometimes help, depending on the severity. However, use with caution.

If your furniture is the painted version, cleaning is a bit less critical, but still avoid harsh chemicals.

My conclusion: The biggest cause of damage is using the wrong cleaning products or not drying properly.

If you like, please provide more details about your furniture, and I can send you my personal cleaning checklist.

Best regards!
