Hello everyone,

We are currently in the design phase of our (dream) city villa. It will be built without a basement, with two full floors and, of course, a hip roof.

My question now is whether we should pour a concrete slab for the upper ceiling, that is, the ceiling from the upper floor to the attic, or not.

My father-in-law recommends pouring concrete for both ceilings...

What do you think? Is that common practice?

Thanks & regards

This situation involves competing requirements, which is common in construction (structural stability, energy efficiency, cost). If there are sufficient internal walls in the upper floor for bracing, casting a concrete slab may not be necessary, which reduces costs. In that case, open-web joists would likely be both the most economical and energy-efficient solution.

We are also building an urban villa, but I have not yet seen a general contractor (GC) or main contractor (MC) offer to construct a solid ceiling over the upper floor. For us, the question is still open because we are less than 25 m (82 feet) away from the forest, and falling trees must be taken into account according to the development plan.
