Hello everyone,

I just signed up here because we are in the middle of planning our build. We are designing an urban villa with a roof overhang of 80 cm (31 inches) and I would like to install recessed spotlights in the roof overhang. I have read that there can sometimes be issues with insects in such areas. However, on another site I saw that lights with 3000 Kelvin do not attract insects. Does anyone here have experience with this?

Thank you very much

Thank you all for the very constructive feedback.
Based on all the comments, we have decided not to install recessed spotlights but rather to install lighting on the exterior wall of the house.

Classic up/down windows from the new residential development range? If so, I wish you a really skilled plasterer!

Light creates atmosphere and can truly showcase a house. The idea of using spotlights in the roof overhang is actually a good one. It should be done with warm light and a subtle, preferably dimmable solution. There are many options available that aren’t too expensive.

You can also control them with a timer. At 3 watts per spotlight, the electricity costs aren’t high. With 12 spotlights, that’s 36 watts; running for 3 hours a day is about 100 watt-hours. That amounts to roughly 5 cents daily at current electricity prices. Thanks to LED technology, quality lighting costs almost nothing.

Well, that sounds good in theory. In practice, even "warm LEDs" tend to produce a harsh white light. Truly warm-colored LEDs are difficult to find and more expensive.

Highlighting a house—what for? Maybe the public doesn’t even want to see the house. Somehow, I find it quite a self-centered idea to want to highlight one’s own house.

I think the idea of highlighting your own house is so absurd and silly that it never even crossed my mind. Honestly, I’m already satisfied when people highlight their window decorations around Christmas.

Well, some focus on tiles to highlight the bathroom, others want the facade to look nice because they see the house more often than they use the bathroom. Everyone has their quirks. However, there are definitely different possibilities on the street-facing side.

To quote two savings bank ads: some proud homeowner wants (if necessary, even with a chest hair toupee) to show “the Schober” what a great house Nikolaus Diestelmeier can afford *LOLLL* *SCNR*

Murals, for example, could come back into fashion. In a modern version, neighbors might think you know Banksy ;-)
